secret room

your voice unlocked a room in my heart
i never knew was there
where ghosts of my past shimmered
and darkness whispered, beware…

turn away and stay away, she said
for nothing in here is safe
he’ll only stir memories long forgotten
and hopeful dreams bound in chains

he’ll lead you where you shouldn’t follow
to a place of heartbreak and pain
so take care
, she said to me
or you’ll sink right back into that pit of shame.

but i didn’t listen, did i?
i let your voice seep deep within
till the day i stood in front of that secret room,
unlocked the door and walked right in.

Reborn

It’s difficult to breathe some days
when all you see are walls going up
isolating you from everything you hold dear –
freedom, the truth…
there’s nothing left to hold the lies back
but the will to keep on fighting
even as the walls start closing in
till you’re left with nothing but flimsy hope
just before your world grows dim

what’s the world coming to?
what’s happening to everything we worked for?
every freedom we thought we had, eroded
right after precious right,
can we truly take any more?
when the few are blinded by greed
and power and scorn
the walls are rising, closing in…
and, in fear, the world is reborn

Muse

He appears in many guises,
filling every corner of my dreams,
his darkness matching the demons
that linger beneath the seams
of the fears I seek to bury
yet no matter how hard I try
he comes without knocking, unbidden
like a swarm of locusts darkening the sky

And after he gets what he wants from me
stripping me of everything I once held dear
it’s a release that’s like no other,
where nothing else dares come near.
And so I leave the door wide open
of this little cage I still cling to,
waiting patiently for him to return,
gracing me with a madness that speaks so true.
