To Sleep, Perchance to Dream Some More

What kind of sleeper are you? Do you drop off like a stone and awaken refreshed, or do you need pitch black and silence to drift off to dream?

Do you ever sleep?
you ask in your weary state
after we’ve finished a few rounds
of the wrestling that we do on the bed, on the table,
or on the floor amid clean laundry (mind you)
and pair-less socks,
but instead of sleeping like you, I’m wide awake
my mind swirling with thoughts and ideas
while you, spent and exhausted, yearn only for
sleep to take you away, blissfully away from one
whose mind is now on the go –
even in slo-mo, not replaying what happened, oh, no!
Too delicious for words, too wrapped up
in mind-numbing waves still coursing now
but only in my mind, for you’ve awakened
more than you bargained for, this head of mine,
now on the go, ready for one more –
just one more delicious
round.

Do you ever sleep?
you ask again, as I begin to tell you
about the boy and the girl, and of how they end up
together, lying wrapped in a jumble of arms and legs
and hair, my long long hair like Rapunzel,
but without the golden strands,
for mine are dark, with a smattering of gray now
though you love that, every single strand,
and then you tell me to close my eyes and sleep,
dear gods above, sleep and tell me that story
in the morning – when we go for yet
another round, another delicious round,
knowing there will be more tales inside my head
just waiting to be unbound.
So promise me, I say, and you do,
you promise to set them free
with a kiss and a warm embrace till sweet,
sweet sleep finally claims me.

  1. I used to be a “just a few hours sleep” person. I used to read in bed into the wee hours of the morning, and still get up fresh as a daisy.
Not anymore. Don’t know what’s been hapening to me, but since this winter started, I fall asleep when I put my kids to bed (around 9pm) and in the weekends, when they take a nap, I fall asleep too. It’s quite anoying since I get so many things done when they sleep… and now, nothing. :/

    1. Hopefully it’s temporary. I get that way sometimes although if I could and still be healthy doing it, I would go through life with only 3 hours of sleep each night. There’s just so much to do and discover…although a rainy day is enough to make me want to sink deep beneath my covers and stay there…chores be darned 🙂

I'd love to hear what you think!
