Daily Prompt: Keep Your Hands Away From My Silvana!

What is your favorite sweet thing to eat? Bread pudding? Chocolate chip oatmeal cookies? A smooth and creamy piece of cheesecake? Tell us all about the anticipation and delight of eating your favorite dessert. Not into sweets? Tell us all about your weakness for that certain salty snack.

Silvana Nirvana!

If someone whispered the word, “silvana” in my ear at a party, you’ll know where to find me – and when you do, I’ll probably be in the midst of stuffing myself with this delectable butterscotch meringue cake of sin.

My mother introduced me to silvanas for she always bought pineapple and cassava pies at the local bakery every Sundays  My older brother and I love this stuff and will fight to death for the last one – though we’re too polite to do that in public.  Except for our eyes shooting out those death rays at each other, we both are the epitome of tact and self-control.

When my brother brought silvanas (now the current way it’s spelled) for my birthday – purchased from a shop aptly called the House of Silvanas – I just about thought I had died and gone to heaven.  I almost ate the entire box but since everyone was sorta watching me, I did manage to exercise some self-control – and left one piece for whoever was lucky enough to realize that there even was a box of silvanas at the party.  Fortunately for everyone else, my brother bought two boxes.  Guess he knew me too well…

Unfortunately the House of Silvanas closed down (they do take orders for pick up), but I found a few websites that have the recipe.  Now I just need whatever self-control I have left not to make myself a whole cake pan of it.

  1. I like almost all sweets so picking a favourite is a decision I can’t make. My favourite cake of all time, though, might be a lemon cake with raspberry whipped cream between the 4 thin layers and a whipped cream based icing. It’s a perfect mixture of creamy, tart and sweet. The place that used to make it has gone bust though, so it’s only a memory but I’ve managed to to get along with lemon curd tart (shortbread crust) with a single half strawberry on each slice or tartlet. (It’s tough, but I’m managing :-p )

    1. I’ve never had lemon cake with raspberry topping – and 4 layers to boot! Sometimes when places that make our favorite dessert goes bust, as much as we hate it, it’s almost for the best (of our waist lines and our insulin levels) 🙂 but life finds a way and so we always manage to find a replacement though nothing is quite like the original.

      1. There’s a grocery store chain where I can find a kind of knock-off which gives me the flavours but only at half the size (but probably all the sugar 😉 )

      2. (continued due to my twitchy fingers) So although it’s true we may find substitutes, sometimes they’re worse 🙂

      3. Well since I only get near the place that sells the substitute every couple of months, I’m not worried 🙂 I worry more about falling into the trap of buying something just because it’s sweet and available and ending up eating way too much of it.

  2. I’ve been trying to think what is my favorite dessert…carrot cake. no, lemon bars, no.wait. Tiramisu, no, no. wait. Coffee ice cream. no, no, not that, I love it but it’s not my favorite. Raspberries. Yeah, no. Chinese food. You idiot, that’s not dessert. oh. sorry, Shut up. I didn’t say anything. I wasn’t talking to you. I know, I know. Torrones. Yeah. Torrones. No. Wait, Sugar cookies. with Frosting. That’s it. Soft Sugar Cookies with Butter Cream Frosting. Round or Shapes, I like them all. (I really like ones in shapes.) Yup. (Don’t asked me what my favorite food is. My brain already hurts.)

I'd love to hear what you think!
