A classic question, revisited: what are the five items you must have on a deserted island?
Photographers, artists, poets: show us NECESSITIES.
- Bottled water – one can live without food for a few days, but not water. So, definitely water.
- Matches – I’m not rubbing anything, thank you very much.
- Writing paper – I just read Marlen Haushofer’s “The Wall” and I will write out my experiences to preserve my sanity
- Pencil – see #3
- Knife – Oh, so many uses, let me count the ways…on second thought, maybe not.

Great post! This list reflects my own sentiments, but I’d likely have to have a book with me for when my hand grows tired of writing/to preserve the pencil for rescue sign making. I’m keen on Sylvia Plath’s “Bell Jar”, but if that is too much, I’d go John Kennedy Toole’s “Confederacy”. Not advocating for suicidal art. These are just two of my favorite books.
1. A flint. used to start fires reuseable.
2. A knife. Hunting, making tools, building shelter used to start fires.
3. Tarp. Used for shelter, catching rain water, clothing.
4. String. Used for fishing, hunting, survival.
5. Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
You can make your own pencils with charcoal from the fire and oil from coconuts. You can make paper from palm leaves. There’s no place to recyle, so you don’t want the plastic from bottled water (lol), rain water is better for you anyway, and there’s always a fresh water stream somewhere on the island. Never ever take a depressing book to a place where you may be alone. (lol). (Learned all this in the Navy.)
Your list is waaay better than mine! Even Mr. M thought of this question all night and came up with just about the same list you have there except for Sherlock Holmes, though I can’t remember what his fifth item was.
I like the bottled water one 🙂 My top five would be: 1. Blanket (I’m always cold lol) 2. Hammock 3. My glasses 4. Solar-powered laptop 5. Flare Gun (for when I get bored and want to leave the island). I also want to say that I’ve nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award. 🙂
Oh wow! Thank you for the nomination!
Your choices for your items are way more practical than mine 🙂 Guess I’m not going to last too long on that island…
No problem! There’s some more details on my page if you’re interested 🙂
Haha, well at least you’ll have fun writing 🙂
